L.B. Simmons to Release Second Novel

June 12, 2013 at 5:48 am (Events) (, , , , , , , , , , )

The author of Running on Empty not only just got her first book trailer released into the ether, but tomorrow will start the publishing process of her second book. The release date for her next book is July 13th, 2013.

For those who loved L.B. Simmons’ Running on Empty, or merely want a small taste of her writing before diving into a full novel, comes the novella “Recovery.”

“It reads like a long epilogue to Running on Empty,” Simmons says about her latest book, “Let them know that they will need to read RoE to know what’s going on!”

The back jacket reads…

I have the perfect life.

I’ve finally found my happy ending.

I fought through the loss of one husband, lucky enough to be given a second chance at a lifetime of happiness. Settling into our new lives, however, may not be as easy as it seems.

What really happens after the fairytale ending? What happens after the prince rescues the princess? After he sweeps her off her feet and carries her off into the sunset? Do they truly live happily ever after?

Well…

This is our story.

Even though itL.B.Simmons is only 30,000 some odd words in length, both the author and her readers are excited about this new installment and her upcoming book signing tour.  Remember that you heard it here first… she will be in the Houston area signing copies of her books in early to mid August at two Half Price Books locations.

L.B. Simmons is a graduate of Texas A&M University and holds a degree in Biomedical Science. She has been a practicing Chemist for the last 11 years. She lives with her husband and three daughters in Texas and writes every chance she gets.

When I Am Not Reading – Comicpalooza 2013 Day Three

May 27, 2013 at 4:12 pm (Events) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

DSC03671Such a nice guy.  He was running off to get a snack, but took time to chat with me and take a few pictures.  I’m kind of weird about celebrities… they are people too… and am typically uneasy about presuming to chat with them just because I see their face all the time.  But he is really easy going and didn’t give me a chance to feel uncomfortable at all.

Easy Breezy Reads…

May 12, 2013 at 5:05 pm (Education, Events, Reviews) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

mercy-watsonTitle: Mercy Watson Fights Crime

Author: Kate DiCamillo

I heard a rumor that Kate DiCamillo used to work for Half Price Books. With that being said, and me being an event coordinator for the company, I am bound and determined to get her in my store. So of course, I have to read everything she wrote aloud to my daughter in the interim.

And the kiddo loved Mercy Watson. It’s an easy reader chapter book with lots of pictures, and after sitting through countless Magic Tree House books, her attention span is right on par with these pig stories.

I highly recommend Mercy Watson books for toddlers on up to kiddos who can read this for themselves (8 years?). Mercy is highly entertaining as are her co-stars.

And for the Adults in the room…

Stay posted for future signings.

Title: Don’t Die By Your Own Hands

Author: Reeshemah Holmes

I booked nutrition coach Reeshemah Holmes for a book signing at Half Price Books in Humble. The signing was just last night and she was kind enough to give me a copy of her book to read and review.

It truly is a busy person’s guide. It’s just shy of 70 pages and depending on your reading speed could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to conquer. I read it right before heading to bed after coming home from the signing.

It’s a great motivational tool for those who have already selected a diet plan; encouraging them not with a specific diet, but the tools to stick to the diet they’ve chosen as a lifestyle rather than a fad.

Don’t Die By Your Own Hands is definitely worth while for anyone wanting to change their life but uncertain of their power to do so… or someone who is convinced that they can change at any time, but haven’t changed yet.

For homeschooling parents who read my blog, this is also a good book to hand your teens as a lifestyle guide to follow their sports/ P.E. programs and rituals.  There’s a lot of good advice about handling goals, nutrition, and staying healthy mentally in order to stay healthy physically.

A Weekend With Super Heroes

May 7, 2013 at 3:31 am (Events) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Half Price Books Humble just celebrated May the Fourth Be With You in serious style.  There was a costume contest, a raffle, Comicpalooza tickets to give away, free comic books, and free art work by some amazing artists.

Bright and early in the morning, sporting a Spiderman t-shirt and super awesome white frilly skirt, my daughter showed up bright eyed and bushy tailed to get her own free artwork.  Here she is chatting with artist Merrick Shaka Khan.

Shortly after this photo our costume contest winner also showed up bright and early. Meet Doctor Who:

In the early afternoon we had free ice cream from Amy’s Ice Creams and lots of coupons to share…

Then, Aoristos – Creationeer arrived to offer his artistic talents to our customers for a few hours. It was amazing to watch him put peoples’ faces into their favorite characters.

Where Curiosity Comes to Stay

April 18, 2013 at 7:18 am (Events, The Whim) (, , , , , , , , )

One of my favorite shops put out a short film.  The shop is called Good Books in the Woods, I credit them for inspiration in the bio on the back of my first novella which will be coming out soon.  Recently, I planned to write a When We’re Not Reading segment on the release party for the film as well as on Journaling Night for HPB Humble.  The post never occurred as I had so much fun at both events, I forgot to take pictures.

Luckily, I don’t have to spend too much time what an incredible evening it was… coffee, wine, cookies, fruit trays, book browsing, film viewing… all in the cozy living room of Good Books in the Woods, because the film is available for you to see too.

I hope you enjoy it!

As for Journaling… the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm, I sit myself at the table in the Metaphysics and Health section at Half Price Books Humble with journals, pens, prisma pencils, clip art, and a whole lot of creative energy.  Inevitably, one or two customers always join me.  It’s really relaxing and offers a chance to really kick all your cares from the day out of your mind.

Needless to say, despite the fact that the segments are called When We’re Not Reading, there’s generally a bookish theme to every aspect of our lives.
